I will offer the rat to the snakes straight on as previously mentioned. They usually go right after the head.
On occasion one will eat it backwards but they usually get it down. I also have a couple 'special' snakes that eat them sideways and just fold them in half. I don't know what that is all about but they eat it and don't seem to have any issues so I let them be.
