That's a great idea- I'll check out the hardware store this week.

    Thanks!

I used the plans on here for the start of my colony; it only held them while I rushed to finish the rack I'd meant to build before I came home with the rats but...anyway! It worked for a temporary fix and did the job. If nothing else maybe it will give you some ideas as to how to build yours. Hopefully it's helpful and not a waste of time, lol!

Thanks for the info! To update this, I did end up purchasing some 36" mortar tubs from HD. I am not very crafty, but I built a top out of 2" X 2"s and 1/2" wire mesh that fits over a tub snugly and I have the spare tub to make cleaning a breeze. I don't think the rats will be able to reach the wood either.

As far as cost (just in case this helps anyone else), I believe I paid $12 each for the tubs, the wood was $3 and change for one top, and the wire was around $8 for a small roll. I still have leftover wire for other projects/feeders/etc.

If I find that I need to expand further, I can just build one of the DIY racks since I already have some of the tubs now and some of the wire as well.

Thanks again for all of your help!
