Opinions on rats eyes

I was told kiln dried pine is the best thing to use to prevent this type of thing. They said it is not contagious unless pneumonia develops. I would try and pick up some Tylan just in case for future use :( I was told it is only $30 at tractor supply company.

Just because a rat is producing porphyrin, doesn't mean it has an RI. It could be stress, irritation, age, etc. Here are a couple of sites that might help.

That can be caused by inhaling too much dust or ammonia, or by a URI. It can also be caused by an abscess or cancer in the face. So keep an eye out.

It's difficult for me to see the photo on my phone, but could it be 'red tears'?

I've gotten rats with this, I've seen this on some of my rats in the past, etc.

I never treated for anything. Most of the time it goes away, especially if you fix the problem that is causing it.

the ones i got were over crowded before i got them. Once that was fixed, they were better.

Others were over heated when the heat spiked and the ac stopped working. Fixed that and they got better.

*shrug* mine never showed any other symptoms though.

Tylan's probably a good thing to have on hand anyway (and thanks for reminding me! I've been meaning to put together a first aid kit for the rat room), but changing the bedding should do the trick if you're using carefresh. Kiln dried pine just works a lot better if you're keeping anything more than a pair of pet rats. I think it smells better too, and the only lice outbreak I ever had was while using carefresh (no new rats or anything, there were lice or lice eggs in the bedding).
