I agree about dimmers and heat bulbs. The same isn't true of heat pads or cords, however--those can actually get hotter over time, so they should never be run full out, and temperatures should always be checked daily if they're being used with a dimmer.

That said, I think a good thermostat is the most important piece of equipment a reptile owner can purchase.

i went out and bought a ceramic bulb (my dome has a ceramic top not plastic). So now i have both my UTH and my dome hooked to my t-stat and set that to about 91 degrees. I have an 18 inch florescent light for daytime use hooked to a timer to turn off at night. So the UTH and ceramic bulb run 24/7. My temps now stay pretty consistent at 92 under hot hide and 83 under cold hide.

hold on, are you saying that both the UTH and CHE are plugged into the same thermostat?

if so this is not good, as the CHE and UTH have drastically different wattages. This means that the UTH is either going to get way too how because the thermostat is trying to power the CHE or the CHE isn't going to put out any heat because the thermostat isn't providing enough power.

as of right now the CHE is the only thing hooked up b/c its the only thing that will heat both sides up. the UTH is just un-plugged not being used. Should i get another t-stat to run that to provide both underbelly and basking heat?

If the CHE is providing the correct temperatures, then there is no need for the UTH.

as long as the hot side is between 88-92 degrees and the cool side is between 78-82 you are fine.
