I'm definitely with the people upthread.
First off, if you can't afford to feed and house kids, don't have them. Birth control is NOT rocket science, and it's a lot cheaper than kids are. That, or if you're of a religious persuasion that thinks every sperm is sacred, you could always refrain from sex (oh noes!).
Second, if I'm paying for your reproductive irresponsibilities to eat, it had better be healthy food. I see no problem with the idea of restricting what can be bought with those funds.
Hm, judging by what I just typed, you don't want to get *me* started on it either, and I toned it down somewhat from where I started. :)
Couldn't have said it better.... IL is one of the worst states.. Like I said on another state, I'm one of 4 workers who isn't on it...I actually got denied. Apparently $300 is enough to live off a month. BUT people who make $1,500+ can get $500 to $600 (yes.. ALOT lie, but you would think they would do SOME checking.)

It's about time they do something about those EBT cards. Here they're are countless stories of purchases of lottery and booze. Check out this story

My sister lives right next to the local food bank and you should see some of the cars pulling in there! How is it you can afford the newest car but not be able to buy food? And why is it that most the people I know who has EBT and WIC still manage to have plenty of pot and still not manage to pay rent? I an going to get myself in trouble, I can easily go on forever on this but I better not...

I agree also. They should restrict food stamps for foods like on the WIC program.
If you want cookies, you can still bake cookies with staples you buy like sugar, flour, butter, etc. It's cheaper to bake cookies than buy them generally. No one NEEDS Twinkies and snack cakes, chips, soda and candy. Sorry, but you don't NEED those items. If you're on welfare, get food stamps, you shouldn't be buying luxary goods.
If people can't buy the luxary goods, maybe there'd be more incentive to get off the welfare programs and on their own two feet.
I understand some folks fall on hard times, and need assistance. I'm all for folks getting assistance they need. But again, no one needs luxary goods like candy and chips.

i don't think they should be telling people what food to buy...however if you're going to buy food, it shouldn't be junk food. However again...junk food is usually cheaper than nutritious food. Kind of sucks either way.

X2 from the Gourmet Chef. ;)
Times are hard, and these "standards" are complete bs.... I know a person who drives a Ferrari BUT still gets $900 in food stamps. You can lie your BUT off to get through them though, it will bite you in the ARSE when you get caught though...

So what you and the OP say is it's okay for them to you OUR tax money to buy junk? We give money away in this country and it's BS..... The ways we give out food stamps and such need to be completely re-written.....
I'll go as far to give you this... It's good to have a snack every now and then...BUT on Food Stamps, you should buy food... Not gas station deli's, not soda.... The reason why most of these foods are on the list is because it gives the "grocery" stores more money.

Wait how would this be possible? Also the person who said the people in front of them in the line at the grocery store how is it that rich people get food stamps?
I understand the whole process except how you actually get the stamps... I assumed there was some sort od screening process for people who get them...?

When I was in college in Delaware, I worked at a Wawa and couldn't believe the stuff people were allowed to buy with food stamps...made me wonder what the point of them were.

Sometimes, but with smart budgeting and eating in proper proportions, balanced meals that are fairly healthy are not difficult to put together. You're not going to get prime cuts of meat or seafood on food stamps, but you shouldn't be buying garbage either, IMO.
