For $50-$75 you can get a Ranco which isn't proportional but better then what you have now. Rancos can be purchased from reptile basics.

The problem with those is that they don't respond to changes in room temperature so they require constant monitoring and adjustments.

Its still better than nothing right now for the OP.

Sounds like the OP is new and its a first time snake. How many here had 100s to drop up front on first pet with out doing it in installments.

Just be sure to insulate the tub well so no drafts can get under making the UTH cool down and you should be fine. Save some money ad get a Johnson or Ranco Thermsotat and youll be fine.

Ok, thanks for the advice but what if I buy this?

Also bought a luggage strap the wrap around the tub so hopefully no escaping.

Btw, don't have a snake yet. I plan on getting one in April. I just like to be prepared.

at least it doesnt fluctuate though, and for ten bucks is a way better option imo. and like rich said, the rheostat will work fine for now, but just so you know, i get those temps with it set as low as will go with three magazines between the pad and the bottom of the tank

Awesome that youre taking the initiative to set everything up months in advance!! The VE-100 should work fine, you can also google "herpstat" which is made by Spyder Robotics and the cheapest model is about $100 and is absolutely fool proof. Ive also heard amazing things about the Vivarium Electronics thermostats, so either one would be a good buy and would last your snakes entire life.

The VE-100 is a non-proportional thermostat. If you want to get a VE line thermostat I would get the VE-200. I personally wouldn't get anything other than a Herpstat. They are the best.

I Looked up the herpstat but it doesn't say if it comes with the probe.
