I don't think so at all. Personally, from what I've seen of ball pythons and many other snakes, the tight, dark quarters are even preferable in making them feel more secure in their habitat, as well as making it easier for the keeper to maintain better heat and humidity. IMO because of those two things, they improve the quality of life of the animal.
I know they really don't need the 'exercise' but do you think they get enough of it in a rack/tub?
It's not that they don't need exercise, because many snakes do, especially slower-metabolism snakes like boas. That would have to be provided by the keeper in the form of handling and "outings" for the animal, regardless of whether they're in an enclosure or a tub. The amount of exercise they get in their cages is negligible.
Do you use racks/tubs just because you have a larger collection and it is more costly / space inefficient to use enclosures?
I recently got my rack and use it because it's more space-efficient, became more cost-effective because I plan on adding more snakes, and also because it allows me to provide good husbandry much easier, so I guess a combination of everything. My collection isn't really large compared to those of others on here (I've only got 5) but I also have a lower budget than many on here because I'm a student and work only part-time.
If you only had 6-12 animals, would you still use a rack? Assuming that most racks hold about 6-10 tubs from what I've seen.
I have 5 and yes, I use a rack. I do plan on expanding the collection though.
