Both work well!
I do both! I put Native Earth on top of the mesh for me Regular Ol' Rats and in the bins for my ASFs....not much gets wasted because I keep an eye on how much i give them, I dont put more in until the previous stuff is gone or almost gone...Hope this helps :D

I do the same as Johnny for my rats but in the bin. Just enough to get them through till the next day because I feed and water every day.
