Do you trust buying Hets

Theres plenty of others that will buy the hets maybe not as many from CL as compared to other sites. I have a pair of double het glows that I never hesitated to lay the caching down on. Why didnt I hesitate? Because the purchase was from a TRUSTED source that I have gotten to know over the past few years. There are the cons out there but there are also ALOT of GREAT people in the industry

Some people are also willing to take the chance. A possible het sometimes isn't too much more expensive than a nice normal, so you have to ask yourself--am I willing to spend this much on an animal that could be nothing? Is the animal's looks worth adding to my collection if it doesn't have that gene it's possibly het for? Do I trust that if this animal doesn't prove out I will believe I was unlucky and not suspect the breeder?

I know when I start breeding I don't want to sell hets or possible hets for this very reason, so I know I'll be working with all visuals, at least at first. Gonna be a pricy start, but at least my animals will all look like the gene they are carrying! Maybe when I get a good reputation and some loyal customers there will be a few het females to just get me some more babies.

It completely depends on who the seller is.

Although a seller that I love has a 66% het clown that has SUCH a black back that I don't even doubt he would throw clowns. I would probably buy that guy from just about anyone.

As the others have said, it's all about knowing who you CAN trust... and if you spend enough time researching (or just getting to know the community), it will be clear who can be trusted. I have a pair of 100% het albinos from Justin Kobylka, and had absolutely no reservations about dealing with him - as his reputation is spotless and well-established. Haven't produced a clutch with those snakes yet, but they're working on it as we speak. ;)

But you only mention 50% and 66% hets in your original post, which opens up a whole different can of worms. Not even NERD (one of the most reputable breeders in the US) could guarantee anything with POSS hets, since that's kind of the whole point... those are produced from a breeding where hets are only possible, so you're always taking a chance with them. That's why they're only priced marginally higher, since you won't know if they're het until after breeding. Buy a 100% het from a reputable breeder, and then you can be assured they are the real deal.

Seems most the hets ive sold are to repeat customers. Ive had a Few new customers buy hets and no one has a problem.

Some hets dont prove out in first year it happens, but dont mean its not a het.

You can find say a butter 50% het ghost the same price as a normal butter, as some breeders dont bother advertising them as hets. And thats when people get the crazy hypo and other clutches popping up.

This is where I was going. Trust is a main factor, but bottom line is obviously cost. If you had $5,000 in your pocket....would you buy a pied for $800 or het-pied for $150 ? Available funds x % of trust = purchase decision .:)

i sell all my poss hets as normals. they are easier to sell that way....lol

many of the females ill sell to friends first then to the pet store. pet store knows what they could be, but i tell them they have to sell them as normals due to the price i sell them to the store for.

As primarily a corn snake breeder, I deal with a lot more recessive genes that snakes can be het for. The vast majority of 100% hets and possible het snakes I have purchased over the years have proven out for me, but I did have a two that were sold to me as 100% hets from a well-known breeder that didn't prove out when bred to visuals. The seller had gotten out of the business by the time I bred them, so I couldn't even complain. It was disappointing and ruined a breeding project that was really important to me. Those snakes not proving out could have very well been due to honest mix-ups or retained sperm from a previous breeding making them not het for what they were supposed to be het for. Who knows. In any case, I have become somewhat leary of purchasing hets, because you really don't know. I say if you can find the visual and afford to purchase it, go with that, especially with males.

Unless its a reputable breeder that I have dealt with before, no I would not buy a het. I'll spend the extra on a visual. All the hets that I work with at the moment are hets that I produced myself, so I know for a fact what their genetics are.

I am not someone that trust others easily however there how people I have absolutely no problem buying hets from that being said I am rarely in the market for possible hets simply because to me it's pretty much a gamble and I am not the gambling type.

I would only consider buying a entire clutch of possible hets that is female heavy, I did 2 years ago buying 1.7 Possible Het Clowns.

I also do not sell possible hets, I keep the females to prove them or disprove them myself and let the males go as normals (wholesale to a pet store)
