Not better. ABS Plastic is way better. It lasts longer and isn't so heavy. all the heavy weight of the melamine will end up making the shelves sag in time.

Thanks... pretty proud about how nice the rack came out...and yes u are right about the weight it is freaking heavy as hell... took three of us to carry up the stairs.....

Melamine is heavy, that is for sure. The only down side to ABS plastic is its price though.
