Yes it is, and this coming from an independent who doesn't like any of those news channels... as a reference/research professional, my brain literally hurts at FOX News' flawed reporting and "research." And let's not even get started on their flame tactics, which no other news source practices so openly.

That being said (and going with the story being real), it sounds like this woman took a LOT of time off - and probably more than she actually had to, save her father's death & son's illness. So jerk move or not, the company had to do what they had to do... as somebody said above, the economy is hurting, so you also have to realize a company can't sit around waiting for her to return. I sincerely hope she finds a new job soon, and that her son recovers well from the transplant. But if/when she does find another job, she needs to be more careful about how personal leave is used.

If my above post sounded heartless at all, it's because I had a similar thought to yours... sorry, but I've just known too many people like that! You know, the one co-worker who's always got some tragedy going on in his/her life? Father's sick, daughter's having emotional problems, car broke down, great-uncle-in-law has an infected splinter, etc, etc. I guess some people really do have crappy luck, but c'mon!! There's a point where you have to think they're just a drama queen, or milking the vacation/sick time for all it's worth.

Assuming that this story holds some truth to it:

Wow. I can not believe some people are so heartless. I can't believe they're also trying to charge the son a re-enrolling fee. Most schools that I know of (in Ontario, at least) have policies that deal with extenuating circumstances.
I've had to miss some things and have special accommodations because of what I'm going through right now, and my case is no where near as severe as a kidney transplant, yet they accommodate regardless.

Some people have no heart. This is why i hate living in a greedy, money-based economy.
