    You could get a 10 dollar plug in dimmer from home depot, set it half way for starters and adjust it from there

    what I would try is turning off the lamps and just use the UTH and add/remove substrate to the area and see if you can get it right....worked for me.

    BTW, my snake climbs my plastic vines and camps up there for hours (one under glass, one under screen. other under covered screen....no rhyme or reason). He'll be up there at lights out but is always back in a hide by morning.
