ok, like i said give it a try with using only the UTH.
Do you have it on a thermostat?
Try re temping it in about an hour and see what the cool side reads. If anything even moving the bulb up higher from the tank would help if the temps are too low on the cool side.

There is a chance that you're doing everything right, but snake is just comfortable there. My temps, humidity, etc are all spot on, but my guy can be found on the cool side more often than not. He's growing and eating incredibly well. All snakes can differ in that regard.

The cool side should NOT be 72ºF! that is far to LOW for a Royal! 78 at the lowest and 80 is the norm 79-84 ambient and 89-94 hot. Where you all got 72 I'll never know that is cooler than any I have seen.

Drop you cool side temps to 80. Check your hot side again, it might be a touvh high especially for a small snake little ones I use 89º hot spot.

72 for cool side?! Did I miss something here?

Where did you get that? That could make a BP sick. 75 is the lowest I've heard of even in breeding season. And some people consider that to be extreme.

you guys are right 75 is more acceptable.
i should have double checked my resources.
either way, the snake knows more than we do. If he doesnt need the hot spot then he wont use it. obviously your cool side being at 80 is working just fine for the snake for the time being. If he never uses the hot side at all then maybe it would be time for a change in temps.
Either way i dont think you need an UTH and a bulb but thats just me. As long as everything is regulated by a thermostat you should be just fine.

Francesco that is fine temps for you set up. I might try to drop the cool end temps so your range was closer to 79-81 and you might drop the warm/hot end one degree in the range as well. But that is nit picking a bit.

My cool side usually is around the 78 area (I can't get it stable when it gets above 80, so there it sits!), and both my BPs are almost always on the cold side. No need to worry. :)
