I haven't had too much trouble with ambient temps. My room stays about 69-70 and with the 3" 10watt flexwatt I keep the warm end of my tubs at 90-92 and the cool end stays at 83-85 according to my temp gun. Now one thing I definitely recommend an enclosed back rather than an open back to preserve heat and limit heat loss due to air flow but other than that I haven't had any trouble.

Every set up is different. I have a drafty room that in the winter runs 63-75ºF. I have no problem with the flexwatt warming the ambient temps I usually get 90 Hot 80 cool with ambient temps of 83 or so. I have side vented tubs high low holes for good air flow, I don't agree with low air flow systems to my mind it is a good way to breed bacteria. My rack is PVCx which runs cooler than wood. Mine is a vented back, low slots just over the heat tape. I find with my set up the flexwatt heats the ambient air temp just fine but each is different. Stable room temps would make things much easier but in my case the added power bill from an oil heater is extreme. I found a way around it, I have designed things to be as efficient as possiable and the extra power to heat everything (rack plus 5 enclosures) is less than 10$ a month. I rarely run anything over 10% power on any heat source.
