i have a hand towel over most of my screen top and i just keep it very wet (but not dripping) when i need to bump up the humidity when she is in shed and i find it keeps the humidity in better then aluminum foil. plus it helps create humidity by being wet and directly above the warm side. :gj:
believe me i stressed out big time during the 1st couple months i had my girl but i eventually just settled into a routine and although i get worried from time to time, for the most part it's easy going.
Good advice. Reminds me of when my daughters were born.

do you have something controlling the heat pad? you said you have a rheo for the lamp...what about some kind of thermostat for the pad? if that pad is not controlled your snake WILL get burned. if the heat pad is controlled and your getting good temps you really shouldnt need the lamp...besides lamps tend to suck out humidity.
and...bp's are very shy nocturnal creatures so lamps would only stress them out.
I don't have something controlling the pad. I think my snake did get a little singed when he burrowed down way to the glass bottom once. He had a kind of ashen spot that has now shed off.

Would it be OK to put a few paper towels down over the pad, under the aspen?

Also, the lamp is ceramic and doesn't produce light. It does, as you mentioned, dry the air a lot, although the pad alone did not produce enough heat.

the 1st time i saw my girl's biggest dump i was like ":O holy cow! that came outta you?!?!?!" it's really funny though cuz she's always gone #2 after being fed the day after shedding. she sheds, eats, poos and at that point is in snakey heaven. you could almost hear her sigh of contentment.

an uncontrolled heat pad will inevitably lead to a nasty burn eventually so you really need to get that thing hooked up to a thermostat or a dimmer at the least ASAP.
you need a warm spot temp of 90 degrees and 80 for the cool side but i go in ranges of 85-90 warm & 75-80 cool. they never go below that & occasionally i'll get a temp spike up to 95 but i monitor my temps neuroticly so i can make neccessary adjustments to the thermostat to raise/lower the temps as needed.
if the heat pad doesnt create enough heat then chances are its either too small or it has too low wattage.
right now i have a 10.5" x 11" exo terra heat wave desert heat pad and its running on 16 watts.
for the time being though i guess you can cover the entire screen surrounding the lamp so that theres very little open screen for the humidity to escape through. just dont let the towel touch the lamp cuz that could be a fire hazard.

    Thanks, PMmommanessy247!

I guess I have a lot to learn, and to redo since I got this pet and habitat from a 7th grader. I will see if I can put the ceramic lamp and the pad on one dimmer. If not, I'll get another. Also, I didn't know that thermometers were available to add onto a pad or lamp. I thought I had to buy the pad with a thermometer OR use a dimmer. Learn sumthin new every day!
