While I can somewhat agree with what your saying about it being silly to call one line of reduced/banded balls tigers, the Jolliff tigers were around for years before the desert mutation was discovered, proven, then combined with enchi to make the new tigers. It doesn't really seem fair to me that the original tigers essentially have had their name usurped, especially considering the length of time that name had been established. Just because people might not consider that particular mutation all too significant doesn't really seem a good enough reason for it to have to give up its name to whatever designer mutation comes along that some people think deserve it more. Just like you said, there are so many other names that we can choose for them - why take a name that already belongs to another ball python mutation?

Just a bit of food for thought. Stefan has been bringing in similar looking balls for quite some time. I remember seeing one of Stefan's Banana balls in Daytona in 2003. The first Banana ball that is the expensive snake that is most peoples desire right now was not bought by Will Slough until 2005. I don't think it has anything to do with creativity.

See I never said it was fair, as we all know sometimes life just isn't fair. The name "Tiger" has been stolen by the enchi x desert and the hobby as a whole has accepted that name as such. The other "tiger" in my opinion should just be called genetic banded since every post on it has to disclose that anyways because most people that search for tiger are in fact looking for the desert cross. So again, fair? No. Fact? Yup! We already have a genetic stripe name so what's wrong with genetic banded? Instead of "Tiger: joliff line genetic banded" Or "tiger: joliff line reduced pattern"

Personally I worry less about the name and more about what it will do for my collection. They could have called it the "One eyed one horned flying purple people eater" and it wouldn't matter. That's like people getting all upset because they get confused with ghost, hypo, true ghost, Desert ghost Deserts. Do your research before you buy anything and for get the name..

It's only one shop in Germany (ms-reptilien) that thinks he can choose names for every dinker he sells.
Too bad because he is idd calling it banana, tiger etc...
He has his own lines of woba, harlequin, fefe balls, stripes etc. I'm afraid not all genetically proven.

My guess is that people are making it more difficult then it should be...Why not just call a enchi x desert what it really is, a enchi x desert?

There's two "banana's"...the USA banana and the EU "Germany" banana.

Two completely different morphs all together....kind of like the Puma.

MATTI is correct on his naming convention about the animals he brings in. He usually names them from the areas where they came from. seeing the EU banana in person (at his shop).....it's somewhat of a reduced pattern/spider/woma type of morph with a clean belly....it's been proven by him and other breeders.

anything that is unusual...usually gets a name slapped to it.

Every time i search for "Graphite ball python" I get a link to some dorky site calling a very granite & blackback couple of snakes that otherwise look pretty 'normal'. It happens, and really the only thing is just to know that people want cool sounding names, rather than accurate ones. Calling a dinker granite looking thing a graphite probably gets their site more hits because most herpers like me are looking for the Ben Seigel white and grey ones!

I don't know, whatever. People are going to do what they want! Especially since there is motivation to draw people into your site with flashy names XD
