The response time for the volunteers is 45 min. But the government saved 35000 a year, and just got re-elected on the strength of the tax reform in the budget. I can't wait to hear the same story, man burns in fire while firefighters (well firefighter) sits in truck.

That is another great point, the budgets are getting cut everywhere, from CA to here in MA (ours was just cut by a very large amount...I'm not getting a raise this year lol) If people don't want to pay more taxes, depts can't pay for training and equipment. My dept is the only dept within miles with a hovercraft (for ice rescues) and and boat (for water rescues). We also have a dive team, which is rare for this area. However, with all the budget cuts, the dive team may be going bye-bye since they need training 4-6 times a year for ice/water rescues, and the town simply can't afford it.

Here is another article, showing a better side of the same story. It also shows water temps.

I've been in law enforcement for 29 years, 18 of which was supervising in communications and 2 years as an investigator in the state medical examiners office. My husband is the public information director for a state law enforcement agency.

I know how the media plays thing. I have absolutely no issues in how the responders handled the situation. In instances like this one there are circumstances on site beyond what any of us will ever be aware of. Of course the media won't inform you of those either even if they learn all the facts-they want the shock stories sadly.
