It is a PE1 TG1 infrared thermometer tempgun. I had alot of positive reviews on Amazon.I am always checking temps on things makes life alot easier with all the reptile set ups I have.

If its on a dimmer, I'd try adjusting that first. Otherwise, try buying a digital thermometer with a probe and taping the probe to the bottom of the tank.
