Re: Cypress mulch for ball pythons.... substrate help?
I would really stick with Cypress from pet stores/trusted online pet retailers. The cypress at the home improvement stores often contain dyes and other toxic elements and the price difference is minimal overall. If you want to step it up a notch, I would recommend Reptibark. A little more expensive, but worth it. I used Cypress for years and swore up and down I would never change. In the upper Midwest, it worked well to hold in humidity and was relatively inexpensive. The only down sides were the dust and fine particles that were a pain in the rear deal with during monthly tear downs and the fact I would see my snakes cruising around once in a while with a splinter sticking out their sides.
Then I was introduced to Reptibark (Fir bark). The ZooMed is triple filtered so there's almost zero dust. PetSmart and Petco also carry generic versions that are even cheaper. With three 2x2x1 enclosures, the $20 bag lasts 3 months at 1/4" depth. They do make smaller bags as well. You can also find it online....
