speaking of walmart while you're there pick up a accurite thermometer, the brand accurite. it also has a hydrometer built in which is quite accurate. this is only $12 and also comes with a probe for temp.

Slightly off topic, did you test the accurite? Mine is way off 26% high and 1.76º Low the zoo meds I have are worse with humidity but better with temps.

The most accurate I have tested so far, has been the analogue western instrument hygrometer. Out of the box (ok bag...) it was perfect, in fact I bought 5 all the same and all perfect. So far better than any digital although I am planning on ordering a calibrate-able digital one (intended for cigar humidors) soon as good ones can also be adjusted.

OP you mentioned your temps they are a bit low typically high 80s low 90s for a hot spot and high 70s low 80s for the cool side. Usually most would agree the 80/90 is about right.

The salt test works ok, but you never really know if you have too much or too little water in the salt. I prefer using the Boveda calibration packs. You just open it up, slide the hygrometer inside, let it stabilize and it should read 70%. They cost about 5 dollars.

NewParadigms it isn't that hard a saturated solution of sodium chloride and distilled water at 30ºC will be ( in an enclosed area), RH 75.09% +/- 0.11% The temperature matters but there is an offset charts on line.

I've seen the salt RH charts, and calibrated Hygrometers in sealed jars with salt solution and read results differing by 5% or more than they read from the calibration packs from boveda. All of my cigar hygrometers were calibrated with boveda's and they read all over the place when calibrating with the salt test. It's worked for lots of people, but I've not had great luck with it being completely accurate. In fact, probably the most accurate thing I've used are heartfelt humidity beads, they maintain right at 65% humidity and that's what I use for all my cigars.
