I went with pine shavings as well. Can't beat the price and it keeps the odor down better than aspen in my op.

Fine pine shavings. The myth that it kills rats holds absolutely no water. All of my breeders have made it to 3 years old or darn near close to it, and I don't stop breeding them when they hit a certain age, I let them go till they have small litters then sit in retirement tubs after that. Anyway, fine shavings only because they are softer, the bigger shavings are sharp and the rats, I'm sure, don't appreciate it. It's inexpensive and does pretty well with the smell.
The corn cob stuff is alright. I use it every now and again when I am short on space in the grow out tub. It gets pretty stinky and they cob mixed with pine does a good job soaking up the pee/smell.

Pine shavings here. I've tried everything to control odor. Never found anything that works. The smaller the shavings, the longer the smell is held down, but it still stinks after a few days. I use a sawdust small shaving mix that seems to work better than just saw dust or large shavings.
