I want to add something to this:

Time and again, I see people say 'There's something wrong with my pet, but I cannot afford a vet right now'. Their solution is to do nothing.

That lack of action is not ethical, moral, or legal. Taking a sick or injured pet to the vet isn't optional. It's required by law. If you cannot afford it, then what you need to do is surrender your pet to a rescue or shelter that CAN get it medical treatment. Selfishly keeping it until it dies doesn't show any sort of love or regard.

Many people don't seem to understand that if you can't afford the vet--you can't afford the pet.

I absolutely agree, and get very angry at people with this attitude. I understand not having thousands at your disposal for major pet emergencies, but you should at least have a backup plan - and enough to cover reasonable vet emergencies or visits. I'm pretty broke these days, but still took my cat & dog to the vet for fleas/tapeworms recently... they were suffering, and it was my responsibility to handle that asap. I had to cut back on groceries for myself that month, but that's a sacrifice we make when caring for animals. I used to have the following quote in my signature - "The kind man feeds his beast before sitting down to dinner" - and it's a philosophy I believe in 100%.

This is really true. Every week I deal with people's I'll reptiles at work, most of them have simple problems that can be easily dealt with without the help of a vet. For this reason the local reptile vets refer everyone without emergencies to consult us first before paying for exams. Unfortunately, this results in many people getting the idea that the store I work at has either a magical way to fix serious illnesses or unlimited cash flow to pay for fixingp problems other people let sit for too long.

There are situations when we take animals and pay for all their treatment and rehabilitation, but that is rarely an option, usually people wait so long before getting in touch with knowledgable people and we end up suggesting how to give the critter a comfortable send off.

Also, as has been stated, it is really hard to tell with some reptiles that you haven't worked with a ton, but if something like a bearded dragon goes from eating everyday to sleeping all the time and doesn't eat for even three days, I call that cause for phoning a vet or the closest person you know is knowledgable.

I have seen it all when it comes to what procrastination does to a pets health when that health is in question. Nothing good ever comes of waiting around and hoping for a problem to fix itself.
