Kindle is a reader, that's what it does and it (apparently) does it quite well. It has e-ink and a glare-less screen, as close to a book experience as possible, which is what I was looking for. If he is going to be reading for hours it should be as 'book like' as, well, a book.
I did look at tablets but eliminated them quickly for a variety of reasons, mostly the glare and display. Size was a factor too, Kindle seems more portable for him. He has a laptop and a smartphone and I honestly don't think he would use or want a tablet.
Besides, I am not an Apple phan (nor is he)...if an iPad was the only thing out there that fit the bill then he would go without. :)

im gonna be honest and i know i will get hate for this but i would just use a book! i don't feel anything is as good and i know the space issue and all but idc we always seem to find space for other crap so why not books!?

    I mostly agree with you.
I got it for him because it's just not practical for him to have his books (or amass more) right now. If he were settled somewhere for the long term I wouldn't have even thought of it.
Technology and gadgets do have their place these days.

You know, I have a strong feeling your son would go ape over an iPad...

I know my 2 sons are always fighting over mine. And about the "just like a book experience" - the iBooks is actually much closer to the book experience than the Kindle. And the glare - you can adjust that. And if the built in adjustment doesn't cut it for you (it does the job for me), then you can always put the anti-glare screen protector on it (my husband got the one that has the privacy feature so that anybody sitting next to you (like on an airplane) won't be able to see what's on the screen.

Okay, okay, so you're hating on the Apple... But, as a programmer, I can't really deny a good product when I see one.
