Look for this in your Walmart:
Accurite Indoor/Outdoor Thermometer/Hygrometer with probe. It costs about $12. Then you can ditch that dial thermometer and put the Accurite on there, stick the probe under the warm-side hide and you should have all you need.

The Indoor temperature will be your ambient temp, the Outdoor temperature will be your hot-side temp and you got your hygrometer for your humidity on the same unit.

I'm going to agree and say the 40 gal is too big for right now. I don't think its too big for a "normal" breeder female at all though...In fact I think an adult male would be fine in a 40 gallon as long as you provide the snake with the proper husbandry. I used to keep my adult male in a 20 gallon long, and I think thats too small. Some may not agree, but thats just me. I look at it like this. I put most of my adults in 41qt tubs, and there fine. A 40 gallon has about the same floor space, but if you don't give the snake ample hiding spots it could result in some issues. Personally rather then go out and buying another tank, just go buy a sterilite tub. Theres tons of pics and tutorials on the here on how to set one up. Then once the snake reaches proper size you can transfer it into the 40.
