Just make sure that you don't get caught up in breeding dumbos or rexes and forget about the reproductive capacity of the animal or the other traits that you are looking for when building your colony.
In other words, don't breed an animal...no matter how cute or fancy they may be...if they don't improve the quality of your colony.
