Mine's been making popping noises for I don't even know how many years now - it's never been painful or locked up on me. I don't expect it to ever go away, but given that it hasn't ever hurt, that's not a big deal for me. Hopefully yours is either resolvable or at least doesn't cause you much pain.

I have TMJ. It's not that it hurts, for me, like someone is punching or stabbing my jaw.
It is the constant clicking every time I go to open my mouth to chew, yawn, talk, drink, etc. that makes my mouth hurt. My jaw gets sore from constantly popping roughly in/out of place. When I eat, it hurts so bad--it's almost like a workout. :(
However, it can be treated with a rubber mouth splint, usually orthodontists provide them. TMJ is mostly caused by grinding your teeth while sleeping, or jaw misalignment. You simply wear the splint at night and it gets better eventually.
If your jaw continues popping to the point where, like mine, it gets sore and overworked, you need to talk to your dentist about seeing an orthodontist. It'll help. :)
