Darn, I wish I could get some racks now. But then I would have to ship them with me when I go off to school. Anybody know of some good super magical collapsable racks? Ah, I can dream.

Anyway, it seems like tubs are the easiest and cheapest way to go. I could easily stock up on a few good tubs to use, and then eventually build a rack for them.

I'll be researching thermostats now, as well as cheap but solid DiY racks. Any other good thermostats worth mentioning other than herpstat I should look in to?

Helix, Ranco (prewired), and Johnson, personally I have only used the herpstat. I have a nd and a pro. They are kinda idiot proof really the helix seems to be basically the same. There was a poll awhile ago and it was between the Helix and a Herpstat. (67% to 19%) the others were under 9%.

I've seen a number of people convert a small bookcase or dvd storage cabinet into a functional rack with minimal effort and cost, so look into that option. A bonus is most of them really look nice, too.

There are also various levels of clearness in tubs, while none are "glass clear" some are much more see through than others are.

I'll probably be relying on my aquariums for that 'landscaped tank' look, since I am quite into aquascaping. For reptiles, I think I would prefer a planted, naturalistic type enclosure, more suited for things like cresties than balls.

So it looks like a nice thermostat is certainly something to budget for! A multi probe would be nice, but I'm unsure how long until I start to expand my non-existant collection. How long is the lifespan of thermostats?

    Hi NomiGold,

do yourself a favour and get a rack. I started with a tank setup and it was a bit of a pain to keep the temps and humidity right. also, the cleaning of a tub is SOOOOO much easier. 5-10 minutes and you're done.

I only have one snake , my Hogg Island Boa, in a display tank now. And, as you've already mentioned , BP's aren't much of a display snake anyhow.

Tub or rack both are simple and take the fanagaling out of getting your husbandry right.
