    Depending on what you are using for substrate, and how thick it is will determine what the surface temp will be. If you are using a wood substrate like aspen, etc... it should only be about 1/2 inch thick and no more than 1 inch. Jujst because the substrate is 84-87 on top, it may be 93 on the glass, which is where it should be. Remember, if you snake needs the extra heat it will move the substrate to get to it. Even with newspaper and paper towel, they will get under it...

    I am using aspen and it's less than an inch thick. He does burrow down to the glass, which is still under 90 since I kept having to turn down the UTH. That's what I was worried about, if it's ok for the temps to be a little low until my herpstat arrives. The glass is what was getting so hot before and I didn't want him to burn himself, so I turned it down a hairs worth at a time until it didn't get too hot anymore. But now it doesn't get quite hot enough lol.
