Well, the vet said that he didn't have any sort of infections (he checked his poo and all for any sign of parasites, etc.), but to be on the safe side, he gave him some antibiotics. He seemed to think that it could just be this time of year. He did seem to think that Apophis was a little overweight, so I'm going to be doing better care on him and watching his feeding. Being my only adult snake, I hadn't realized that he needed to go longer between eating than my hatchlings and young adults. :( I'm supposed to watch him and see if the bulges near his vent go down, so I'll keep everyone posted. Thanks for the replies everyone, especially BAH. :) It is appreciated!

You're welcome. Glad everything appeared OK.

Yeah, my adult male corns I only feed every 10-14 days. Its quite easy for them to get overweight.

Well, here's a little update and now a very serious question. My supposed male Corn, Apophis, began laying eggs earlier this evening. I'm feeling very duped and stupid at the moment, because apparently someone didn't know what they were doing when they probed "him" and I believed that they did know.

To top it all off, I believe that a good number of the eggs are viable. Though I usually keep Apophis in her own tank, a little while ago I had to improvise because my UTH gave out on me at a time when I couldn't just run to the store and get a new one right away. I had housed her with another Corn a long time before that, so I put her in with Lilith until I could get the new UTH. It wasn't longer than 48 hours and I didn't think anything of it until tonight when Apophis laid eggs. So now I am almost sure that Lilith is a male and that she got it on with Apophis.

So here's my question. I took Apophis to the vet on Wednesday and he gave "her" a shot of antibiotics, because at that time we didn't realize she was a she and was going to be laying soon. Does anyone think that the antis would harm the viable eggs? I am really hoping not, because this will be my first clutch of eggs and I am totally stoked. :D

Anyway, to everyone that mentioned "she" looked like she was about to lay eggs, kudos to you! And I apologize about insisting Apophis was male. I guess you really just never know 100%, and I feel like an @$$ for having believed someone just on what they'd said. Thanks everyone, and I'll keep you posted.

Yeah, I definitely think I'll be in the market for a new vet. >.< But it was probably more my fault, because I was very insistent that she was a he. I guess I'll have to do some research around here and see if I can find an actual herp vet who knows more about herps. I did call the vet today and asked him about the eggs and the antibiotics. He doesn't seem to think they'll be harmed, but he also didn't catch the fact that SHE was about to lay eggs. :( I guess all I can do is wait and see.

I pulled the eggs out this morning because Apopha (ha ha ha, had to feminize it!) was finally done laying. It was hysterical trying to get the eggs and slugs from between her coils, every time I touched her she flinched hard enough to move my hand away. :D She had a total of 15 slugs and 7 viable eggs. Here's a couple of pics to show both. :)

Wow 22 eggs :O.To bad most were slugs:(.When looking for a herp vet please make sure its not a dog and cat vet wanting to pretend they know about reptiles ;).To be honest you really dont need a vet unless one of your snakes gets sick.We can answer your questions about the other stuff here correctly the first time :P.

Well, 7 good eggs is a nice enough number for me to start. This will be my first clutch, so it actually turned out better for my benefit. As for the vet...I like having one, juuuust in case I need it. ;) So I'll probably do some looking around here and see if I can find one that is a little more knowledgeable about herps.

And it wasn't much of an unpleasant surprise, just more of a "SAY WHAT!?!" shocker. I have learned my lesson, though. Do not trust the word of just anyone on the matter of sexing snakes. lol! I'll keep everyone updated on how the hatching comes along in a couple of months or so. Thanks for the help and advice everyone!
