Breeding your snake to a friends ... Problems?

Here is what me and my breeding partner do.

Occassionally we will purchase snakes together (50/50). When it comes time to feed we split the cost each month for that animal. When it comes time to breed the animal we both decide what to breed it to. We also split housing costs (substrate, water, electricity).

Example:

I bred my spider male to his normal female this year.

We plan to split the clutch 50/50 even though I'm the owner of the morph and he's the owner of the normal. All costs to keep this animal, breed it, hell even incubate the eggs has been split right down the middle.

Last year we bought a 1.1 pair of het albinos. We also split the food, housing, etc. costs 50/50. When they breed and produce we will also split the cost of the clutch 50/50 also.

We don't necessarily split the clutch like people are explaining here. We hatch the eggs, feed the babies, we make sure they are in the best health, and then we sell them. Any profits made from the sale of a "split" clutch is just that.... split. We split all the proceeds 50/50. When we get to a clutch that has something worth holding back we again "split" the cost to keep the animal, raise it, feed it, house it, etc. When and if it produce something we also split that.

It seems complicated, but to us it isn't. I've been close friends with this person for over 10 years. I very seriously doubt we would let a snake collection or a little bit of money come between us. These are things you should consider before entering into an agreement with a "friend". Especially if you plan to keep this friend after the venture is completed.

Not to mention, I have my own personal collection, as does he. And we have a combined collection. Any clutches bred by a male and female of my own are solely mine. Same with his animals.

You will have to come to terms on this issue together. If it were me and it was nothing but a normal I would cut him/her out and purchase my own normal.

I can find normals for a little more than pocket and couch change.

I was always taught to never mix business and friendship.
So I dont. Just my rule. Seen it go south to many times.

As far as my opinion goes like I said purchase your own normal.... If that is what you choose to do then I would maybe wait and pick a morph that I would like to combo in this project and still be on my own...hope this helps...

Honestly, even if you do not think so, I can see this ripping apart your friendship. He might want more than just a normal or a spider or a pastel, and your going to have a delema. Not saying it will happen, but I have seen breeder loans tear people apart when both people are providing morphs, and in your case with his part being a normal it could easily become touchy.

Well and he DOES deserve something. If you had a male to use, you'd use it instead of HIS male. He is contributing to the breeding, even if it's "just" the sperm from his normal male. If it is that little of an effort to get a female morph pregnant, try it without any male snake, and see how many viable eggs you get. If you don't have a male to use, and you want to use someone else's male, then they deserve SOMETHING, depending on what would make them happy.

His male might be "just a normal" but in breeding it to your female, his snake will undergo some amount of stress, in being moved to a strange environment, breeding a female, possibly going off feed for a indeterminate amount of time afterwards because he is in 'breeding mode' which sometimes happens... and I'm sure he loves his snake as his pet also.

If you did not come to some sort of written agreement that makes both of you happy ahead of time, specifying what happens if there's no morphs, no good eggs, or all morphs, then the two of you would end up in a big fuss.

There are a lot of variables here. If this friend is a GOOD friend of yours,one that you really care about, and likewise with him, why not? You can both participate in something fun and rewarding together, and before the breeding takes place, draw up an agreement with terms you both decide upon. He doesn't necessarily have to get a lot out of the deal, just what you both agree upon. If he's not that good of a friend, and you don't really feel that comfortable doing a breeding loan with it, or have a lot of considerations, then don't do it. Normal males are suuuuuper CHEAP. Heck,I see people givin' em away! I've adopted and rehomed quite a few for free myself.

imo what a waste of a female bee's season breeding to a normal male. would not even consider. i would have him buy a breeder lesser male run that to her you could both end up ery happy

if the two of you are doing this just for fun then splitting the clutch wouldn't be a big deal.

However if your doing this to sell the snakes and make a profit, then ya I'd take the advice of the others that have said to just buy a male normal or another morph. The profit will most likely cover the extra cost you spent.

I would of look around for a morph male, a super pastel would of been a nice pick. your wasting a breedable female bee on a normal. I would offer him a pastel and he should be thankful for that. if your bee was the male and he had a normal female up to size then he would of had more to offer. but a normal male. if it was my normal male I would be glad to get one pastel out of it.
