Re: found a turtle or tortoise
From the care sheet you can see that the care of a box turtle is not the same as the set up for your snake. The snake set up is not good for a box turtle. This is a wild caught animal that might not eat store bought food.
I comend you on getting the turtle out of the drain.
But. You are not prepaired to care for this animal and this is going to take more then you will need to set up for a snake. It is not an animal that can wait weeks till you can get what you need together. This is not fair to put this turtle in a environment that is not going to be for its best interest.
I strongly suggest you follow the care sheet or do the right thing and let it go in a wooded area near the place you found it. Dont drive it miles away to a park or you will do it more harm.
Re: found a turtle or tortoise
i hunted down some worms & slugs. great news.... the turtle is eating for the first time in who knows how long since its been down in that drain. :D
Re: found a turtle or tortoise
i hear what your saying though, i do. i just cant let it go cuz
1) the neighborhood kids will kill it if they see it or know where it is.
2) my kids are already attached to it. :(
im doing the best i can to care for it.
we're gonna go out today & get some stuff for it with whatever money we do have. :)
also, i have 3 sides of the terrarium covered with a paper background.
Re: found a turtle or tortoise
& theres 2 water dishes in there for the turtle to drink from as well.
Re: found a turtle or tortoise
ok then you need to get the proper tub and substrate that will help you with your moisture.
1 This is a great way to keep box turtles on a budget use a tub like this. This will show you how to set one up properly

Re: found a turtle or tortoise
You also want the water dishes so they can easily get into them . A lot of people use roller paint pans so they can easily walk in and get out while giving them a fairly deep section but yet not to deep. Turtles that flip in a water bowl will drown. Others will use the water catchers of plant pots. The standard house hold incandescent light bulb like a hundred watt will give you a nice basking spot but use a thermometer to check the temps so that you are at least getting it in the 90s in the hot end. Just keep position the bulb to get the right temp. You will have to invest in a uva/uvb bulb soon.Untill then take him out in nice weather on sunny days for 15 to 20 minutes. To get some sort of uv light.
Re: found a turtle or tortoise
ok thanks so much for all the info.
Re: found a turtle or tortoise
let it go, not to be mean but thats best, if you live in those above native, states, I live in NC, and not sure if its againest anything to catch wild and keep, i kept them as a kid and they did alright even had one a couple years, any way the your keeping it, isn't the best, get a 75 gallon tub and mix dirt substrate, get one of those water bowls, the can walk into and a hide, also i hade a zilla goose neck lamp for the MVB, not sure if this has been said already..
Re: found a turtle or tortoise
as i stated before, some of the kids in my neighborhood will kill this turtle if they see it again or know where i released it (they've already tried to drown it in the storm drain before we got it out). also my kids & fiancee are already attached to it so...
i WISH i could let it go & will definitely if i find out its illegal to keep wildlife as pets here in SC but right now, im really afraid of the kids in our neighborhood harming it. that to me sounds more unfair then keeping it (until we find out its illegal anyways).
Re: found a turtle or tortoise
alrighty then....i did a little poking around on the internet & according to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources website, it is NOT illegal to own wildlife as pets, its just "not advised" with the danger of rabies etc. so it sounds like legally we're ok... but i really do understand why people are saying to let the turtle go, being more fair to it and all, but i say its not, due to issue with the neighborhood kids.
we took the turtle outside yesterday for some supervised sun time so we're aware that these turtle need sun & will take the turtle out when weather permits.
our set up has improved and is more "turtle friendly".
we will be making a "turtle bin" for it once it comes time to get our snake.
i will also be disinfecting the terrarium before we bring the snake home.
i think i read on a care sheet that boxc turtles need cycled light or something like that so i turned off the lamp last night & turned it back on this morning. i'll go back to the caresheets & look up their lighting needs.
thanks again for the info you guys.
