For me personally I always side with spending a few bucks versus not being able to sleep at night worrying. Fortunately, there has been only one occassion where we needed to see our vet when we got concerned about one of our critters. It paid off!

Vets have a habit of prophylactically treating snakes with antibiotics - not saying all of them do - but many do.

A 5 month long respiratory infection with no other outward signs would be a new one to me.................

Whistling when agitated or excited is not uncommon in snakes. A quality Vet will know this. Problem is - most aren't and many will needlessly treat the animal "just in case".

agree with skip, i have a beardie that i got from an expo with worms, and it made a popoing sound, no, RI, not to brag but my set-up is working fine for other lizards, so i tell vet, she writes me Another 70 componding prescription, i filled it to be safe, but as of know i think it is just a everyday antimbotic, compared to like some people get an ache, not knowing what it is pops, a ibprofin and pain stops, they have no clue what it is, but it stopped

I agree that after 5 months you definitely would see other signs of illness. I know some of my larger pythons tend to make a hissing/whistling noise when handled, and I always thought it was because their lung was getting squished from me holding them :/

And also, a soak wouldn't hurt him. 20 mins in a bath, dry him down and he should be good. Let us know how things are going with him.
