That would probably make since on why they are selling them pretty cheap for a sweet looking morph

Our PE Stripe line is proven genetic, it just doesn't seem as simple as calling it a recessive gene. The labeling, predictability and variability are what has not been finalized.

But we continue to hatch out cool stripes, and combo stripes, like this Ghost Stripe, which was hatched from a double het breeding, where both parents look normal, no striping, or partial striping, at all.

We have it priced more as a dinking project. Those tri stripes are indeed smoking hot, but also priced at tens of thousands. The PE stripe is low hundreds : )

For someone wanting to play around with it, it is a fun project. And we will continue to combine it for different results each year...

If you do not think it is as simple as calling it a recessive gene, how can you say the Ghost you hatched out was from Double Het parents? I understand that if you get a normal looking baby from a PE Striped animal, and if that animal produced a Striped baby, it could be a "Het." The issue would then be, is it reproducable or just random? Based on what I have read on your site, it seems like a random occurance. If that is the case, there are many, many balls that hatch out partially striped. I hatch out Sulfur Mojaves yearly, that are striped in varying degrees.

I have a normal female that has almost the identical stripe that your Ghost has. I bred her to a Pastel YB male this year.

It seems to me, that if your Striped animals can be called Genetic, the original animal must produce nothing but Hets(recessive), or, a produce a predictable amount of visual babies(dom). Or, do you think it is more like the fabled Jungles, something that randomly shows up?

This is the first time I have agreed with dave but until more breeding is done I must respectfully remain on the fence with this one. Most people who breed BPs know that marking traits are very often passed on. Which is why people selectivly choose "normals" with bands, stripes, reduced patterning etc, to incorporate into their breeding projects. They are genetic in a sense but if you can not take 2 of these visual stripes and create a full clutch of them then how can it be considered a resessive or co dom or anything that isnt just a random normal pattern inheritance?

Not knocking anyone and I do think the pictured snake is a beautiful one. That is just my opinion.

And yes I did read where the term for these snakes has not been finalized so I may be proven wrong in the future.

The Ghost stripe was hatched from parents that were produced by breeding our Ghost line with our original PE Stripe female. Those normal looking babies we labeled double hets (Ghost and PE Stripe) to keep track of the long shot that the stripe would breed through, which nobody had seen yet at that point. We raised those DH's up and bred them, quite a few times now. We have seen Ghosts, Stripes, Partial Stripes, and Ghost Stripes.

It is not at all random, it is predictable, just not to a specific degree. We have hatched thousands of clutches, and I don't see significant partial striping, much less full striping, at "random". But we do see full and partial striping each time we breed this PE Stripe line. We just never know how STRONG the striping is going to be, how diminished/affected the side pattern is going to be, or what percentage are going to be striped.

I have seen the PE Stripe hold over (like a recessive) when breeding hets and double hets. But we have also seen it manifest in a first gen, like a dom. Weird.

We have crossed this into Ghosts, Lessers and Pins, with striping success. We have also bred normal color PE Stripes. We have been breeding the line for a dozen years.

And I am open about my confusion on what it produces. No big deal, it isn't a main focus, or any kind of money maker for us at all. I usually sell the partial stripes from the line unlabled as normals.

As for knowing sure genetics, shoot, I am confused by LOTS of genetics. Why does a Lesser Mojave make a white(ish) snake? WTF is a Lucy? Why so many eye colors? WTF is an Ivory? Why would two Mojaves make a white snake? Why would two YBs make a white snake? Why does a Lesser Pied go completely white? There are LOTS of genetics going on out there that I am unsure about. And the PE Stripes as well : )

Robyn, I think this female (who is gravid at the moment) looks similar to your Ghost male as far as the stripe goes. It will be interesting to see what comes out of the eggs.
