    You can experiment a little if you want to without causing harm. Ball pythons aren't good at estimating their belly surface temps, it's true, and they can burn themselves on 120F hot rocks--but if you keep your warm side just -a little- too hot, their core temps will warm up before they burn themselves, and they'll simply move off if they're uncomfortable. If 98F is too high, you'll see them sitting off to the side of the warm spot, or spending most of their time on the cool side.

    Ideally, though, you want them to be able to sit comfortably on the warm spot.
