Re: newbie alert, feeding questions.
I offer greens in the am....then about 1 pm or so I give crickets...then I offer again at like 4 pm. I have found that mine likes for me to either hand feed him with the tongs....or drop them right in front of him. He will chase them but prefers it this way. Spoiled!! I also found he will eat about 27 crickets in the first afternoon feeding and only a couple at best around 4 pm. His bedtime is about 630-700pm. If I don't put him to sleep...he will just fall asleep on his own. He probably loves the worms...and that is why he is turning up his nose....just keep offering....he will take them eventually. Kind of like the greens.....mine wouldn't touch them but when I switched to giving him only that in the am....he has finally started eating them.
As far as the calcium...that sounds perfect! I also put some on the greens but he doesn't eat enough to suffice so I have to do the crickets as well.
As far as the cricket food....I have heard that it is really not worth it to buy it. Just give greens and some fruit....and give water in a shallow dish with a sponge in it...(that way they can get out). I read somewhere that if you feed the crickets the greens and fruit that the beardie will get those nutrients as well. ?? Not sure if that is true but worth it I think.
Re: newbie alert, feeding questions.
Ooohh ok. See I work 8 to 430 every weekday, so I turn his light on at 6:30 then at 7:30 I offer his greens. So I guess when I come home I'll offer crickets. And thanks for making me think about him perferring the worms, haha I can see why he's being spoiled. Last night I realized he went to bed about 7:30 to 8. HE'S SOO CUTE WHEN HE SLEEPS :).
Thanks for all the help!
Re: newbie alert, feeding questions.
No problem....I am actually thinking about doing some research on the Dubia Roaches. I heard that they do not smell at all and they are easy to keep. I just have to get over my fear of roaches. But I am totally scared of crickets too....lol. Apparently they cannot survive anywhere except Florida area....(humid and hot). They don't jump...they don't fly and they don't bite...so they won't hurt your beardie. Also I guess they have less chitlin and more "meat" to them...hence better for the beardie.
I don't know....I am going to email a couple of breeders I know and have a conversation about it. I will keep you posted!!
Re: newbie alert, feeding questions.
Roaches are GREAT feeders wayyy better than crickets i've done both dubias and lobsters.
about Gutloading the crickets you DEFINITELY want to gutload them. the only reason they die is if you feed them foods too high in calcium but you definitely want to give them a high protein catfood or foods high in protein. and the reason the calcium is bad is because it makes their exoskeleton stronger so when they try to molt they arent able to. so after their last molt it doesnt matter. but you do need to gutload them the night before you feed. i keep my crickets in a sterlite bin and feed them ground cat food left over beardie salad.
The powersun needs to be at least 12" away for the 100 watt and 24" i think for the 160 watt. so i dont understand how you are getting those temps mine definitely dont. i have to use an aditional light for mine.
if you want any info on dubia, cricket, or lobster roach breeding just shoot me a pm or feel free to ask here. :D
Re: newbie alert, feeding questions.
As far as feeding the crickets I agree....I feed them good food....lots of good veggies and fruit. But I dont feed them calcium...sorry I did not make that more clear....:P
Re: newbie alert, feeding questions.
dont no if already statedm but might as well start ordering crickets online, you can keep them in clear storage bins, and get like 1000 for 20.00 or get 500 for like 16.00
