To play devil's advocate, it is possible he can't come up with a lump sum of money, and can still afford daily care. :confuzd: I personally couldn't get $150-200 together right now, but my snakes never go hungry... since I breed my own live mice, buy frozen in bulk, use tubs for housing and free newspaper as bedding, the daily/weekly costs are nearly zilch. And no, snakes don't need to see a vet regularly, so that's not something you need to factor in - if anyone got sick I'd come up with the money, even if it meant borrowing from a parent or running a tab. So yes, it is possible someone can't afford the adoption fee, but would still be able to take good care of the snake.
If I were you I'd adopt it for no more than $100, and just make sure they can provide a good home (visit their house or request pictures/info to be certain). I've been given 3 corn snakes for free, only because they knew I'd care for them well... didn't even ask for them to be given to me! :oops:

animals can be expensive and someone who cannot afford to buy one should not have one.
