Get your mind out of the gutter. Well, actually, that was my intent. Had to get ya to look. Would you have opened the message if I'd titled it rack lids/yes or no?

Topless is easiest obviously but I am forced to use a top with one of my tubs because of the size of the snake and the risk of escape.

I have used both, and topless is the way to go. Feeding is way easier without lids, as are water changes, and peeking at breeding activity and snapping quick pics. Once you go topless you never go back.

As nearly everyone else has said, topless is best for a rack - that sounds so dirty, LOL.:D One of my racks has to use lids, and it's a real pain in the butt... water dishes are always spilling, and I have to remove tubs completely for everything (cleaning, removing snakes, etc). I tried to remedy the situation by using furniture sliders to prop the tubs, thus eliminating the need for lids, but the snakes took advantage and managed to escape. My big girl even figured out she could push the tub, giving herself a nice gap to squeeze out of. So not only do I recommend topless, but also the front-loading style (as opposed to side-loading, which is what Mona escaped from).

I would go topless as well. I build mine with lids due to the fact that I only have a few, but after it was all said and done I was wishing I'd gone topless. But I kind of fixed the problem. I took and cut the lids in half or a little more and hot glued hinges on the top! So now I just pull out the tub and lift up half of the lid. :D
