The X came about, if memory serves me, during the Pegan days, where the X meant the CROSS, which in turn was to stand for Christ. It really isn't a slight on Christ. I too used to be upset when I saw this Xmas crap, and I guess I still am. But I now know that it isn't a slight, just a lazy way to say Christmas.

I will ALWAYS say CHRISTmas as that's what the holiday is called and about.

I don't think I'll ever get lazy enough to not say the word "Christ"

I also wont say Happy Holidays for the same reason

When my kids were small, we referred to Christmas Day as Christ's Birthday.
Gotta remember what's important in life.

It comes for an old Christian symbol meaning "Christos" and was shortened to the X by western culture.. it looks like this http://www.crivoice.org/images/symbols/chirho.bmp

In Greek, the letter Χ (chi), is the first letter of Christ, and it, or the similar Roman letter X, has been used as an abbreviation for Christ since the mid-16th century.[14] Hence, Xmas is sometimes used as an abbreviation for Christmas
