Everything has been covered except for a few things.

You don't want to 'add a mate' to your balls cage. Ball pythons are solitary and do best without a cage mate of any type. Breeding balls takes a lot of knowledge and time, so unless you're ready for babies, don't put a male and female together (especially not at an early age).

Here's what I would do with the cage. Get your hands on a 6qt or 15qt tub with a good locking clamp lid. Drill or melt holes into the side, and keep that until it's about a year old or so. Ball pythons prefer smaller enclosures, makes them feel more secure. So unless you're buying an adult ball initially, a super large cage isn't the best idea to throw them into.

As for an adult ball python. Females get a bit larger than males, but generally, a good reptile cage for an adult ball python of any age is one like this. IMO, this is a good cage for an adult ball python, but because it is a reptile cage, it may do just fine if there are 2-4 snug hides in there and a lot of fake foliage to keep it secure inside.

The 36 x 18 x 18 would also be a good size for an adult. If it turns out to be a female, it may get a big big for it IMO, but I'd have to see the cage in proportion.

Also, non-heat lights for viewing are fine, as long as you keep a proper day-night cycle. The lighting is not necessary but it also provides no harm unless you don't cycle it.
Also, make sure to get a thermostat of some sort to control the UTH. Unlike what it may say on the back or what petstore employees may tell you, they do not regulate themselves and they get far too hot. If you get a reptile cage though, that will be something different.

Good luck and kudos for asking ahead of time!! :gj:
