No, w/o HDMI X-box can't use HDMI. Borrow your friends cable and see if that's the problem. If it is, you can pick up cables really cheap on ebay.

I thought my cables were bad, turned out I had a hardware issue (this was with the new HDMI x-box). And of course this happened a little over a month after it was out of warranty. $100 later, and they ended up having to just send me a new X-box, couldn't fix mine I guess.

lol yeah, but my last 360 died about 4 days ago from e71, and i case modded it and but in better fans so they wouldnt fix it so i bought a refurb for 120$ yesterday... the problem with the cables still remains for the new 360 and the old one... Ill just try new cables
