A live rat is only harmful if you leave it alone and unattended with a snake.
Re: New BP owner says THANKS
She looks like she could eat a small rat. No vitamins are needed. You can feed your snake f/t it's whole life without a single supplement.
Be advised. Did you do any research on this Vet? Taking a snake to an unqualified Vet can be fatal. Really...it can. Some Vets will find...and treat something your snake does not have. Trust BG....he knows it's happened.:taz:
Everyone read all the responses to this thread. BG is not saying the OP should listen to him(the op should though), but there are many different responses. If you really think about it, who should the op decide to listen to? It's just something that has always bothered BG about advice on a forum. The newbie can be more lost than before once they post a thread. There's really nothing that can be done about this. BG knows everyone is just trying to help, but it can be really confusing to the newbie.

I feed my snakes 10-15% of their body weight. It might be a good idea to purchase a scale and keep track of your snakes growth. Kitchen food scales work well. Most people measure in grams :)
To the original poster. Listen to Kaorte. Because freezing, then thawing the mouse DOES NOT make the mouse/rat less nutritional. I have NEVER read ANYTHING ANYWHERE that says freezing them does.
If it took a frozen/thawed then keep it on frozen thawed. There is absolutely no point in buying live, then pre-killing them IF your snake accepts frozen/thawed. It is more expensive, and a waste of time and driving to buy a live feeder every time your snake eats. You can save alot by buying bags of frozen mice. It's cheap, even if you have to have them shipped. Rodentpro.com is a good one....so is themousefactory.com
Ignore the poster that told you not to feed frozen/thawed and that you should buy live and prekill them. They don't know what they are talking about. Because again, if it's eating frozen/thawed (F/T) it is RIDICULOUS to do it the other way.
Good luck, and congratulations on your new baby. It's a beauty!
There is alot of good advice, but make sure the people you are getting it from know what they are talking about. Just because they have 10 or 15 snakes listed in their signature....doesn't mean they know jack.

As Big Gunns always says. There's really no need for anyone to say this. It obviously goes without saying.:D

ya...but you also suggested that she stop feeding her snake f/t and buy live and prekill them...?? anyone that has read through the posts on here or spoken to a breeder knows its more cost efficient to feed frozen/thawed if your snake will eat them. which the op has clearly stated that her snake would.

Lol...it may be a lost cause...someone should tell him you can only back-peddle so much before you hit the side of the pool......
Like I said...I just hope the original poster figures out who's advice to take around here :)

no you quoted me saying that .. obviously that means im watching my snakes eat live which means if something happens im right there ... but whatever ... the way i see it feed your snakes what they will take ... none of my snakes will take anything but live so i have no choice
and just for further measure i was answering ballmom's question on why not just feed live ... i simply told the op that they didnt have to do frozen just incase the F/T became a later issue ... a hungry snake will eat whatever it can including F/T but on a regular feeding scheduel who is to say it will still take it
