    Scent is probably the main thing. Not all snakes have heat pits and can detect heat signatures, but that is an advantage for many species.

    Most of the time when my snakes strike, they try to hit right by the neck/head. That would be their heat pits working. Typically after the prey dies, they just try to get their jaws around wherever their mouth is. Sometimes it doesn't work like this though, and it takes a few mins to find the head. Snickets will rub against the rat, and poke it with her nose. The flow of the hair comment could hold some truth, that would be pretty smart of them.

    They've tried to start from the rear a few times. There was one time Micron was in shed, and he tried to eat it backwards for 20 mins! After that I stopped watching him, and went to do my own things. Came back later to see he finally got it down, I'm assuming from the head first.
