hehe... I know, Heather. :) I didn't mean to direct that response towards you. I was just using your comment to get mine started. I just mentioned it in case others were reading the thread and thinking they might be able to reuse the heat pack.

I would not buy from someone using a reused box only because the animal before hand could have had mites, or something you don't want on your new prized pet.

You wouldn't trust a person to be aware of that kind of problem and not use a box like that?

I've never reused a box from an animal that has had problems.. Ever..

I'll re-use the boxes around the house, and wash and keep the bags for my own use, but everything I ship or sell is in a new bag inside a new Styrofoam lined box. Being green is no excuse to send someone a snake in a used bag or a box that has had who knows what in it. To me, that's like going to a pet store an buying a snake, then having them put it inside a dirty Sterilite tub for you to take it home in. It makes me mad when I receive a snake from someone, nd it's in an old, used bag, or a box that was used for who knows what before it was used to ship me a snake. It's a blacklist worthy offense, imo.

I will agree with receiving an animal in a dirty old beat up box, but a box that has been used once, that is cleaned and in new condition I will reuse and I have received animals from big breeders in good condition used boxes. If you can't tell a box was previously used and it's clean, there is nothing wrong with being green.

yea but the person would be aware of the mites or any other problem for that matter and i hope would have the common sense to throw away the box the snake came in, just so it doesn't spread to some other snake. and unless they reused the box right away, the mites in the box would die without a host.

I havn't shipped a snake yet, but I did save a few of the boxes I've got snakes in to reuse in the future, box is good, foams already cut, why not use it.

I sell more animals than I buy, so 95% of the time I only have new boxes anyways, but I see no issue with using a clean, undamaged box. Once the integrity is destroyed (holes, damaged corners, peeled layers, etc) the box is trash. If Joe sends me a snake in a brand new box, and the box is mint when it arrives and the box is clean (no waste), I will wipe it out with a disinfectant and store it away for future re-use. It's not because I can't afford a new box. It's not because am too cheap to buy a new box. I do order new from superior enterprises. I re-use because I try to recycle when I can.

To 'blacklist' someone because of their moral compass is pretty shameful.

No snake or lizard I have shipped was lost, damaged or killed due to using a good, clean re-used box.

As far as mites, I would not buy a snake from someone who has mites. If I did get a box with mites I would be all over the seller and the box would be destroyed. As I stated though, I only purchase from people with a good rep. If someone is re-using dirty old mite infested boxes, I am sure they do not have a good rep.

What I mean as long as the seller would be aware of potential problems by reusing the box would guarantee my snake longer then 14 days no problem. I just want to protect my snakes, the sellers reputation, and the health of the animal. No offense meant to anyone out there on my stand point.

I don't reuse them. If I get a snake it goes to QT and I assume everything that came with it could be contaminated as well. Thus all bags and boxes go straight into the trash. Just not worth the risk IMO.

And as I buyer, I would be VERY upset if I received a box that had been used before for the above stated reasons. I don't know where that box has been and don't want boxes that have been in contact with unknown collections coming into my collection.

If you had a snake I wanted to buy and I looked into your rep, and it was good, and I ordered a snake from you and the snake arrived promptly and in good health, in a brand new shiny box, I would QT the snake and inspect/disinfect the box and place it away for future use.

If I didn't trust that the snake from you was likely to be free of mites and in good condition, I wouldn't have ordered from you. If the snake did end up with mites, EVERYTHING in the QT room would be treated.

You are MORE likely to pick up mites from walking into a pet store, vet office or expo, than you are from receiving a snake in the mail from a respected breeder. And if you did pick up some hitchhiker mites from a local collection, the QT room will do you no good. Your snakes and your stack of new boxes could get mites crawling around on them too.

The point is that a clean, structually sound box is just a box.
