Re: My 2012 Prophecy...
Just because an ancient calendar ended in 2012, definitely does NOT mean that the world is going to end. Just because they did not finish that calendar, does NOT mean the world is going to end on the date they finished at. People at my school believe the world is going to end in 2012, but I think it's BS. Didn't they say in the past, "Oh the world is going to end in 2000--somethin!" I don't really remember the years people were saying that, but nothing happened, and the world didn't end in those previous years.
By 2012 I definitely think technology will be so advanced that people are going to be the laziest they have ever been in history. I already see now how people are lazy, and from that people are becoming obese, too. I hear many people say they can't even live without their phone, without the computer, without television, without internet, etc., but when humans first existed on this earth they were able to survive without phones, computers, iPods, television, etc. I have a phone, and I do text a lot, but when I run out of minutes and my phone is useless, I find something better to do than beg my mom for more minutes. The only thing I go on the computer for is for BP.net, MySpace sometimes, and YouTube. I go on this forum to find information, I go on YouTube to watch snake videos, and I go on MySpace to upload pictures of my snakes, I barely even chat with people on MySpace and I'm not on it long at all.
I agree with every sentence on your thread.

Re: My 2012 Prophecy...
Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
I'm pretty sure nothing is going to happen. Frankly if something does, I hope I don't live to see the aftermath.
Anyone ever seen "Wall-E"? I think that is more likely to happen. :)

I'm more inclined to believe it will go down more along the lines of "Maximum Overdrive". Remember that movie?

Re: My 2012 Prophecy...
My best friend and I have been reading and learning about 2012 for a long time, long before it became mainstream. All the while I've been chugging away at school and work, building up savings and lately investing in snakes and my future business. In the end, if the day finally comes and the Earth is about to explode, I don't feel like it will all have been a waste. I'll have something to remember for a few seconds before I get vaporized. And you know what? That's OK with me. My friend fell into the selfish "why bother" attitude for a while and really hurt his relationships and life in general. It truly saddens me to hear that entire classes are following this path now.

Y2k was never the end of the world.. it was feared because computers to that point only used 96,97,98,99 and they feared when everything reset to 00 systems all around the world would crash and there would be mass chaos.. they fixed all the major cases way ahead of time and obviously nothing happend..
many different cultures all around the world predict 2012 having a significant meaning to us as humans, from what the mayans say "Human life as we know it, will cease to exist." this does not mean earth is going to blow up or all humans will die. but SOMETHING drastic will occur that will change life as we know it..
possible new discovory that changes all science?
nuclear war?
the rapture?
meteor?
solar flares?
regardless of what you want to believe or not, i personally think that something will happen in 2012. im not going to quit my day job over it or anything, but im still thinking everyones life will be affected somehow. might be small, might be big idk
I agree with this poster.. & here is why.. Something is happening on that date but the certain combination of things that are happening have never happened all at the same time before. So theoretically, no one knows if it will mean destrucion, global changes, etc.. Scientists are thinking it will a very noticable change but there is no way to know until it happens.. Read on if you want to know what is going to happen... This is what that new movie is based on (loosely) but the movie is fiction. Vamped up for the shock factor & money making..
Scientists have noted that when Jupiter and Saturn are aligned on the same side of the Sun, the solar maximum (the period when we have the most sunspots and flares) is at its weakest; when they are on opposite sides of the Sun the solar maximum is at its strongest. The positions of these two planets on December 21, 2012 are ideal for extreme solar activity.
Our solar system is part of a huge disc shaped collection of stars and planets called the Milky Way. We're located somewhere on the edge of the disc, slightly on top of the narrow disc. But very soon we'll be moving to the bottom of the disc. This change, from top to bottom, begins on December 21, 2012.
Yes, that's right. On the same day when our Sun is at it's solar maximum, something will happen that's never happened for thousands of eons of time -- the ecliptic of our solar system will intersect with the Galactic plane, called the "Galactic Equator" of the Milky Way!
Prior to December 2012 we have been drifting on the top of the pizza, never really able to see the bottom. The plate and pizza are not parallel. They are moving at different angles. We've been drifting down, down, down... and on December 21st, 2012, we will be exactly level with the crust -- forming an "x" at the Galactic Equator where galactic gravity is the strongest. After 2012, if we are still here, we will be passing through the bottom zone, viewing the Milky Way pizza from the South.
Yes, there's even more!
By some amazing coincidence, not only will we be intersecting with the Galactic Equator, but we will be doing this precisely aligned with the center of the Galaxy where there is maximum mass! More mass means more gravity. More gravity means more influence from those barycenters in our Sun. That means exponential increases in solar disruptions -- all coinciding on the same day! Whew..
.......The reason people are freaking out about this is because its not being told exactly what is happening to our solar system and planet. Instead people are only telling and hearing stories about end of the world etc.. But they are not being giving a scientific reason as to why this might be possible..
Y2K was silly. There was no scientific evidence to prove that anything bad would happen if the computers couldnt recognize the year 2000. Sure its possible some systems could have crashed but its not going to make the earth blow up.
The combinations of things happening in our system on that date in 2012 theoretically should do some damage to this planet. Weather changes. Gravity changes. Something. But what exactly? No one knows because these 3 things have never happened all at the same time before. All we can do is wait and see if the planet can handle it.
Its not some goofy scifi armageddon idea. Its science. It hasnt happened yet but it will. So in 3 years I hope we still have internet so we can come here & talk about it again after its happened.

Re: My 2012 Prophecy...
I don't know who your nephew goes to school with, but i will be graduating high school this year. I have plans to attend college, I work everyday after school, i have goals and all that good stuff, but hey maybe im the odd ball.
I personally have 2 guesses about whats going to happen. My first is what i consider my "crazy" idea. Zombies. Running around, killing, eating brains. :rolleye2: My second and more rational thought is that nothing will really happen. I agree that we will be far more technologically advanced by then but there wont be any one day where meteors fall from the sky and fire erupts from the ground. But hey who knows, i guess we will have to wait and see...

Re: My 2012 Prophecy...
the fact you think all of this is going to just stop in 3 years is kinda silly.
We're not going to forget how to hunt for ourselves. tons of people still hunt(for the right reasons). its not going to dissapear in three years. there are still tons of people who are self sufficient, again i don't think they'll magically dissapear in 3 years. we are still animals, we won't forget about our survival instincts even if technology makes everything easier for us.
food: cuisine is ever evolving, it has endless possibilities. sure there are tons of pre packaged products and things like that for the masses, but cooking is an art that isn't just going to dissapear. it'll continue to advance and evolve for years to come. its not like all of our food will be replaced by soilent green and bachelor chow in 2 years. (well, maybe soilent green, a possible solution to the over-population problem :D)
music: again, there will never be a point (not any time soon) that every possible combination of notes will have been performed/recorded. sure theres a lot of music that sounds the same, its because most musicians don't care to go outside the box anymore. if you look hard enough you'll find lots of great, experimental bands, pushing the limits of instruments, music & time signatures as we know it. i think music is just peaking. the fact that theres so much of the same gives more reason to try and create something new.
theres a chance that genetically modified crops could hinder the shortage of food, we just need to get these plants to the countries that need them. i also think new diseases and sicknesses will become more abundant once there are too many people, naturally thinning the population in places that can't afford to fight them off.
i don't wanna occupy my mind with ridiculous prophecies, whats the point? if any of them are true, its a waste of precious time to dwell on them. same if they're not true. who cares. life could end tomorrow, might as well enjoy it with no preoccupations.
I don't know why people think cities aren't 'nature'. they're as natural as anything. we are animals, cities are just our species' naturally created communities. like any other species, we continuously adapt and evolve over time.
just my friendly 2cents.

OP: All of those statements are huge oversimplifications. You like them because they fit neatly into boxes. It doesn't make them true.
