let your snake crawl along a wall then eyeball where his head and tail are when he is at his full length.
then measure the spot.

This is the way I used to measure rattle snakes.

I'm actually hoping for a larger-than-average BP. I don't necessarily like large snakes more than small ones, but i'd prefer it!
