    I use newspaper with a bit of apsen on top. The aspen gives them some stuff to move around and bunch up in their hide if they want, and I like the loose substrate when it comes to spot cleaning. The newspaper for me is mostly just to make it easier to clean the tubs... just roll up the newspaper with all the aspen and what not in it and, DONE!

    I haven't had any problems with the ink bleeding, and one of my boys likes to dump his water, then hide under the paper haha

    My snakes liked to "snake paint" when their newspaper got wet, and get black bellies, which is why I switched to un-printed. Stupid Home Depot has changed to some smaller bagged packing paper with 1/2 the quantity and changed the cuts, which annoys me to no end - so I may have to go to Lowes now.

    As for your question - the ink is vegetable based, so it's no harm to your animals.
