the ONLY plus to melamine is that is comes with a plastic coating...
You can buy that and apply it to plywood too people!
Build it out of plywood. and seal it. either use melamine sheeting and glue it on yourself. or use a counter top style paint to seal the inside.
Half the weight and twice as strong....
Melamine sucks..
