Hey, unless I pony up the cash for one (not likely any time soon), I've got a heck of a longer wait than you do. :P
As far as the white background goes, get a light tent and some lights and some white posterboard for your background. Then you can use the GIMP to clean up the whites if you need to. :gj:

this is the light tent i have (http://www.adorama.com/VRPSIAB.html) but i didn't get it from there or pay that much for it.
the lights are USELESS. i have a flash that i use with my camera that gives me great light. I also never use the bi-pod (???).
My icon is an example of images ive shot with that set up.
tips for making a white background white:
- WHITE BALANCE: if you're unsure of what this is, check your camera manual.
- Avoid colored lights or lights not properly color balanced. Lights range in "temperature" up to 10000 degrees Kelvin. This chart will help you http://www.3drender.com/glossary/colortemp.htm 5200K is "daylight" balanced, this generally gives you good,clean light (as long as you properly set your white balance).
-Avoid over-editing in photoshop. Your shadows always want to be neutral. If you're finding your shadows have an abundance of red, green or blue you'll find the rest of your image has a color cast as well.

GIMP is a free image editing program, like photoshop. It's a bit less user friendly though.
If you have experience with photoshop, there's also a modification of GIMP called GIMPshop that is supposed move everything around to be more like photoshop. I haven't tried it myself, but have heard good things about it.

Amy keeps asking me to build Connie's light tent and I have been putting it off. I hate building things!! :D
