Penguins jump out of the water all the time... It's usually how they get out of the ocean and onto the land. There aren't always nice sloping beaches for them to just cruise up on.
See if you can't find some videos of penguins jumping.... it's pretty stinking cute!! ^_^
Re: Crazy Penguin being chased by Orcas
First off - that video was awesome and just made our day watching it! Kudos to the penguin for a good move and moans of jealousy to the people on that boat! A penguin right next to them and orcas right in front of them! No fair!
Second - a penguin in the water is very powerful indeed. They swim quite fast and they can jump several feet out, as you could see it doing in the video as that's how they avoid predators. I've seen footage of penguins leaping onto a glacier to get away from a predator, it's really cute to watch. :)
Re: Crazy Penguin being chased by Orcas
I will definately have to watch. I didn't think they would be able to jump high enough to get on that small boat, but it makes sense now.
Re: Crazy Penguin being chased by Orcas
Penguins can swim pretty fast - they just kind of swim striaght up and "through" the surface of the water, and their momentum carries them a few feet beyond! That little fellow seemed pretty cozy with the folks on the Zodiac - probably has something to do with the lack of land predators on Antarctica.
