It's just not worth it. Keeping an animal in a place where it's illegal is just plain dumb. Get caught, and you pay--and so does everyone else. Waiting until you can move to a better area isn't such a bad thing. It gives you time to do all your research in advance, and really decide what you want, and save up for it. When you do move (and in my opinion, if you don't like local laws, you SHOULD move), you'll have the best possible experience with the animal.

Don't rule out lobbying to change the law. I suggest joining a local herp society, and rallying them to work on it. If you keep your request reasonable (have them lift the ban only on boids that stay under 8 feet, for example), you may be surprised.
Omaha city had an ordinance against snakes over 6 feet. Our local herp society was able to get them to raise the limit to 8 feet, allowing many more species. It CAN happen. You just have to try. If you're going to try, you had better keep your nose clean while you do! Stay strictly within the law, when you're lobbying to change it, because they WILL be watching you, and someone who's broken the law will have no voice.
